He shared his experience of the time he spent as a prisoner of war, and his thoughts on the continuing conflict, in an interview with Sky’s Beth Rigby.

Pinner recalled the moment when the Russians crossed the border during the initial invasion of Ukraine, saying: ‘Your adrenaline is going. You're nervous, you're scared. You know people that say they aren't scared. I was petrified. You know, it's Russia.’

After being transported to the so-called People’s Republic of Donetsk, Pinner was sentenced to death by Russian authorities

The Bedfordshire native was serving with the Ukrainian military in Melitopol when he was detained and eventually given the death penalty in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic in eastern Ukraine.

Throughout his incarceration, his captors stabbed, beat and electrocuted him in an attempt to extract a confession from him.

According to Mr Pinner, he was asked by the Russians if he was a Nazi, an SAS trooper or an MI6 agent, and was harshly beaten for his failure to answer.

They also cut off his clothes in order to check for right-wing tattoos, and stabbed him in the leg.

‘I was screaming and then I had 200 volts go through me on the chair, control my leg, and I was literally standing up and he electrocuted me in there,’ he said.

‘You feel like your muscles are popping out of you, your body.
