A Black author shares her late mother's story in a book told in first-person narrative.
Rosalind “Bee” Harris has released her new book, The Story of Ruth, in honor of her mother’s passing 15 years ago. In this unique first-person narrative, Harris uses her mother's own words to tell the inspiring story of Ruth Juanita Smith James Boyd. It details the African American experience, from Jim Crow to the first Black president.

Ruth Smith and her family left their racially segregated Mississippi home to move north to Michigan in search of freedom. Harris says of the book, “I wrote this book to memorialize her life. Losing my mother was devastating. My heart sank with pain. Writing this book and expressing my love for her has been soothing to my soul.”

Harris is the publisher of the award-winning Denver Urban Spectrum – a community publication recognized for accuracy in news and information. Former editor James Michael Brodie, who served as editor for this project, says of the book “The telling of this story gives voice to the insightful historical saga of a Black family at a time when many now seek to silence such voices.” He adds, “If ever there was a time to tell our stories, now is that time.”

The Story of Ruth is available in stores and online, including Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Harris hopes that her book will help others remember and honor the life of her mother.
