The picturesque beach front of Lacanau, in western France, has been the center of a recent maritime incident. A British sailor, whose identity remains unknown, went missing in the Bay of Biscay off the coast of France after his yacht, the Tiger PA, was found in a state of disarray during a storm.
It all began on a Friday evening, when authorities in the UK raised concerns about the sailor's lack of response to radio messages. Fortunately, a cargo ship was able to make contact with the yacht and confirm that the man was safe, according to the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture. However, the following day, a distress signal was detected from the Tiger PA, approximately 50 miles off the coast of Lacanau.
A rescue team was immediately launched and, after two and a half hours of searching, a helicopter finally located the yacht. Sadly, it was found ripped open and the only thing inside was an empty life raft. In an effort to find the missing sailor, a Spanish hospital ship, a French navy aircraft, and a cargo ship under the Portuguese flag all joined the search. However, despite their best efforts, the search had to be suspended at 1:33am due to a lack of new information.
According to VesselFinder, the Tiger PA had departed from Weymouth port in Dorset on January 20, just a day and a half prior to the incident. The prefecture took the opportunity to remind people of the importance of taking precautionary measures when going to sea, especially during the winter period when there are often numerous depressions.
It is believed that the storm, named Eowyn, brought winds of up to 55mph to northern France on Friday morning, along with heavy rain.
