On November 17th, tragedy struck the Salem Village Nursing and Rehabilitation home in Joliet, Illinois. William Paschall, 71, was arrested for first-degree murder and aggravated battery to a person 60 years of age or older.
At around 9:25 pm, police officers responded to a call regarding a battery on the sixth floor of the nursing home. Upon arriving on the scene, they found an unresponsive 61-year-old man in the laundry room. Despite the efforts of the facility staff and Joliet Fire Department paramedics, the victim was pronounced dead by the Will County Coroner’s Office.
Sgt. Dwayne English of the Joliet Police Department revealed that Paschall had attacked the unnamed victim in the laundry room after becoming upset with his use of the washing machine. Paschall allegedly punched the victim in the head multiple times and used the victim’s walker in the attack. The victim subsequently fell to the ground, leaving him unresponsive. A staff member was present and attempted to stop the assault before a 911 call was placed.
The Will County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause of death. Paschall was taken and booked at the Will County Adult Detention Facility. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of taking action and speaking up when something wrong is happening.
