Afghanistan, Sep. 1: At least 800 people have been killed and 2,800 injured in a powerful earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan at 11:47 pm (Afghan time) on Sunday. The earthquake completely destroyed three villages and killed 35 people from a single village in the country's Kunar region. The epicenter of the tremor was just 8 km deep, and the magnitude 6 earthquake occurred 140 km from the country's capital Kabul, the Taliban government said in an official statement.

The roads in this area are narrow, making it difficult to rescue and provide food to the earthquake-affected and displaced people. Hundreds of houses were damaged in districts such as Nur Gul, Soki, Watpur, Manogi and Chapadare, with some houses completely destroyed.

Locals told the media that the earth shook 10-12 times on Sunday night.More than 1,000 people died in a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan in 2022. The earthquake that struck on Sunday night was the most devastating since then.
