Every year, we take the time to express our gratitude to all the veterans who have served in the United States military - Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. The commitment and sacrifices these brave individuals have made for our country, both at home and abroad, are priceless and can never be adequately paid.
Black Enterprise would like to thank all the veterans, and especially the 29.2% of Black men and 16.9% of Black women currently enlisted in the military. We'd like to take a moment to highlight some of the notable Black celebrities who were also veterans.
MC Hammer gave the United States Navy three years of his military service before becoming the artist who brought us “Hammer Time” and “Can’t Touch This”. Ice T, known for his acting and rapping career, was once a soldier in the 25th infantry division in Hawaii for the US Army. Talk show host and comedian Sheryl Underwood was a field medic in the US Air Force whose tour of duty took her around the world. Morgan Freeman had already been sky high when he joined the service at the young age of 18, having become an Airman First Class for the US Air Force. Nate Dogg, the Long Beach rapper, had been a US Marine stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Finally, Food Network's Sunny Anderson was a radio host for the military while stationed in Seoul, South Korea.
We hope that these stories of Black military veterans provide some much-deserved inspiration and recognition. We thank them for their service.
