Metro and Feed are working together to make baby formula more accessible for families. We've launched the Formula for Change petition and it's already gained over 50,000 signatures!
These changes are essential in light of the cost-of-living crisis, as current rules mean formula milk products are classed in the same category as tobacco and lottery items. This means that cash-strapped families can't use loyalty cards, coupons, or buy-one-get-one-free deals to purchase baby formula. Although some supermarkets accept gift vouchers, not all do.
In response to this crisis, the petition has been gaining momentum. We've had support from celebrity influencers such as Ladbabymum (Roxanne Hoyle), Katherine Ryan, Ashley James, and Michelle Heaton. We've also had backing from MP Preet Gill and MSP Monica Lennon.
The World Health Organisation has also joined the campaign, calling out the 'profit-driven' manufacturers for 'manipulating the price' of baby formula. This has sparked a huge demand for baby formula, which has been difficult for UK baby banks to meet. Alison Reynolds, who co-runs the Little Smarties Baby Bank in Cardiff said: ‘People end up in circumstances that aren’t their fault, they deserve to have help on hand instead of having to reach out.’
As a result of the hard work of the Formula for Change campaign, it has been awarded the Making A Difference award. This shows that our call for change is being heard.
We hope that the government will take action on this issue and review their infant formula legislation. We want them to give retailers the green light to accept loyalty points, food bank vouchers and store gift cards as payment for infant formula. We want to take our petition to No.10 to show the Prime Minister that this is a situation that can no longer be ignored.
We need your help to make a lasting change. Sign our Formula for Change petition here and help us make baby formula more accessible for all families. If you'd like to share your story, please get in touch with Kirsten.email. Let's make a difference!
