Bhopal is in the midst of a cyber security crisis, as cyber criminals have devised a new modus operandi to dupe people of their money. In the last two months alone, 31 complaints have been lodged at the district cyber crime cell about people being scammed out of their savings.
Officials at the cyber cell have reported that AI-voice cloning fraud is a major issue that citizens need to be aware of and extra cautious about. This was recently demonstrated in the case of an IT employee from Ashoka Garden, who was duped out of Rs 4.75 lakh by a cyber cheat impersonating his brother. The cheat had used a voice-cloning application to imitate the victim's brother and asked for the money on the pretense of getting his mother cured. Unfortunately, the mother of the man the scammer had been impersonating was actually ill at the time.
In a phenomenon known as 'Deep Fake', 159 cases of people pretending to be relatives, friends, or acquaintances have been reported in Bhopal over the last eight months, resulting in a total loss of Rs 43.57 lakh. Senior police officials were unavailable for comment on the issue due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the city on Monday. In response to the visit, former Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh jibed that the BJP is scared ahead of the MP Election 2023.
