Mumbai's Crime Branch Unit 12 made a major breakthrough on Saturday night when they apprehended three individuals in possession of illegal weapons. Sufiyan Shaikh, Vedant alias Anna Thanekar, and Dinanath Yadav were all arrested from Dahisar West without the license to carry weapons.
The police received a tip-off that these individuals were seen carrying weapons with the intention of committing a crime in the MHB police station area. Acting on the information they received, the police set a trap in front of Shitadevi Temple on S.V. Road, Dahisar West and upon inspection, they seized a country-made pistol with three live cartridges from Sufiyan Shaikh's handbag. The gun was valued at ₹25,000 and the text on it stated 'AUTOMATIC PISTOL AND ONLY FOR ARMY SUPPLY'.
Shaikh admitted to not having a license for the weapon and stated that it was given to him by Vedant alias Anna Thanekar. Upon inspection of fresh injuries found on Thanekar's knees, he revealed that he had recently been in an accident and had received the weapons from Dinanath Yadav, his friend's father. The police subsequently arrested Yadav as well.
The police filed a case against the three individuals under sections 25, 29, and 3 of the Arms Act along with 135 and 37 of the Maharashtra Police Act. The operation was conducted by Vilas Bhosale and his team from Unit 12 of the Crime Branch, under the supervision of Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Raj Tilak Roushan. The investigation is still ongoing.
