176 turtles rescued in Odisha, four arrested.
In Jharigaon, a beautiful town located in the Nabarangpur district of Odisha, the forest department officials were busy with a critical mission on Friday night. They successfully arrested four wildlife smugglers who were caught red-handed with 176 live turtles in their possession. This illegal activity was taking place as the smugglers were trying to transport the turtles from Kalahandi to Nabarangpur district.

The four arrested wildlife criminals were identified as Digambar Gopal, 29 years old, from Gotamunda village, Dharam Chalan, 40 years old, Trilochan Chalan, 38 years old, and Gaganeswar Nayak, 36 years old, all residents of Sargiguda village in Kalahandi district. These individuals were swiftly taken into custody by the forest officials from Jharigaon, who had received a tip-off about their illegal activities in the Kangra forest area.

Under the leadership of the Jharigaon forest ranger, Gobinda Chandra Nayak, along with forester Gupta Prasad Mohanty and forest guards M Babaji Rao and Ramakanta Sahu, a night patrol was conducted to catch the smugglers in action. The team spotted four youths on two bikes, carrying suspicious sacks and immediately stopped them for further investigation.

Upon checking the sacks, the forest officials were shocked to find 176 live turtles. The turtles were then safely brought to the Jharigaon forest office for further interrogation. Ranger Gobinda Chandra stated that the investigation is ongoing to uncover the entire network of this smuggling racket. It is believed that these rare turtles were being smuggled to other states, which is a grave concern for the wildlife conservation efforts in the region.

The forest officials are determined to get to the bottom of this illegal operation and put a stop to it. Their swift action and successful rescue of the turtles from the hands of these smugglers are commendable. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting our wildlife and natural resources.
