On Friday morning, a level-two blaze broke out at a 23-storey building in Grant Road, Mumbai. The Dhavalgiri building situated at August Kranti Road, Papnuswadi was the unfortunate site of the fire.
The fire erupted in the duplex flat on the twelfth floor at around 9.35am. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported. Fifteen people were rescued with the help of a ladder, as they were stranded in the 15th, 21st and 22nd floors. The fire was doused by 12.25pm.
Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar said that the fire appears to have been caused by a short-circuit in the electric installation. The firefighting system of the building worked properly and was instrumental in containing the blaze. Eight fire engines, six jumbo tankers and a highrise van were deployed to the scene, as well as two small hose lines and two first aid lines installed in the building.
The fire caused extensive damage, gutting electric installations, furniture, split AC units, false ceiling, documents, clothes and gym equipment. Tragically, the same night, at around 9.38pm, a minor fire broke out at a structure in Ramchandra lane, Malad industrial estate. Stock of clothes, leather bags and trolley bags were reduced to ashes.
All in all, it was a tragic day for the city of Mumbai, yet it is a relief that no one was hurt in the fires. It is a reminder for us all to be vigilant and take the necessary safety precautions to prevent such unfortunate incidents from occurring.
