The National Commission for Women has been receiving an alarming number of complaints this year, with a total of 12,600 so far. Among all states, Uttar Pradesh has the highest number of complaints, earning an unfortunate distinction. This information comes from official data released by the Commission.
Out of these complaints, the majority fall under the category of right to dignity, which includes harassment that is not related to domestic violence. This category alone received 3,107 complaints, according to the NCW data. Following closely behind is the category of domestic violence, with 3,544 complaints. Dowry harassment complaints stood at 1,957, while molestation complaints were at 817. The data also showed 518 complaints of police apathy towards women, and 657 complaints of rape or attempted rape.
Other types of complaints received by the Commission include 493 cases of sexual harassment, 339 cases of cybercrime, 345 cases of stalking, and 206 cases of honour crimes. These numbers are alarming and indicate the prevalence of various forms of violence against women in our society.
The state-wise breakdown of the complaints shows that Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number at 6,470, followed by Delhi at 1,113 and Maharashtra at 762. Bihar had 584 complaints, while Madhya Pradesh had 514, Haryana had 506, Rajasthan had 408, Tamil Nadu had 301, West Bengal had 306, and Karnataka had 305. These numbers are a cause for concern and highlight the need for action to address the issues faced by women.
In total, the NCW registered 28,811 complaints related to women in 2023. These numbers are a stark reminder that despite progress, there is still a long way to go in ensuring the safety and dignity of women in our society. It is crucial for all stakeholders to work together to create a safer and more equitable environment for women.
