100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge donate $150K to school system to fight illiteracy.
The 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge have donated $150,000 to the East Baton Rouge Parish School System to fight the high illiteracy rate in Louisiana. With 41% of students in the state reading below grade level, the organization wants to make a difference for these kids.

Michael Adams, the past president of the 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, said, “It’s going to be life-changing for the kids of this district.” The donation will help approximately 500 students between 8th and 10th grade attending seven schools learn how to read, and is part of an initiative called the “My Brother Can Read” tutoring program.

The funds will be used to pay the teachers taking part in the program, as well as to supplement the salary increase that was recently approved by state lawmakers. Dadrius Lanus, School Board President, said, “It shows that we not only have an immediate need, but we always have some deficiencies and needs to get in front of.” He also added, “The idea is that if we do this good this first year, we can come back and we can invest and do this again next year.”

Andre Harmon, the current president of the 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, also commented on the initiative. He said, “We are actually moving kids to a whole different level. We often hear in Louisiana that we’re at the bottom of almost every list. How about bringing someone to the top of the list and helping them do well in life?”

This isn’t the only time the 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge have lent a helping hand. They donated 500 iPads to school children back in 2022 to help improve literacy in the state. It’s clear that the organization is devoted to giving children in Louisiana the best opportunity for success.
