Sixth formers and gap year takers will now be starting (or polishing off) their university applications.

Results Day came and went in August, so a new crop of soon-to-be A-Level graduates will be vying to get into their dream university or the chance to study their favourite subject.

Whether you’re hoping to study at Durham, Bath or Manchester Met, have your heart set on an English Literature degree or a Chemistry qualification, or are still figuring out your first post-school move… you’ll need to know UCAS’ application deadlines.

Anxious parents will surely want to know when their child’s application is due, to ensure it gets done on time.

Here’s all you need to know.

When did UCAS applications open?

While you could start looking at 2023 undergraduate courses in mid April 2022, the next cycle officially opened on May 17, 2022 – or July 15 this year for UCAS Conservatoires applications.

From this date on, prospective students have been able to start filling in their applications.

However, 2023 undergraduate course application submissions officially opened on September 6, UCAS notes.

So, they’re open now, and have been for a few weeks.

When do UCAS applications close?

For the most part, students have until 6pm on Wednesday, January 25 2023 to submit their applications.

However, there are some key deadlines to be aware of if you’re applying to a Conservatoire for a music course, Oxbridge, or are hoping to study medicine, dentistry or a vet degree.

If you’re applying to the University of Oxford or the University of Cambridge, you have until 6pm on Saturday, October 15 2022 to submit your completed application.

In most cases, you have the same 6pm deadline on October 15 for degrees in medicine, veterinary science, veterinary medicine, and dentistry – but some courses may differ slightly. Make sure to check!

The deadline for most UCAS Conservatoires music courses is slightly earlier, on Monday, October 3.

If you’re not 100% sure of your chosen course’s deadline, make use of UCAS’ search tool to check. Better safe than sorry, eh?

Can you still apply after the deadline?

It’s wise to get your application in before these deadlines, if you want to secure your place.

You can still apply afterwards – but keep in mind that popular courses may well be filled up by then.

Applications can be made from July 5, 2023 to October 15, 2023 for courses starting the same year through a process called Clearing – which is basically how universities fill up their course numbers.

It is suitable for people who are applying after June 30, 2023, have not received any offers from any courses, didn’t want to accept their offers, or have not met the conditions of their applied-for courses.

How you apply is slightly different, though, as it involves chatting to universities on the phone.

You can find out more about Clearing on the UCAS website.
