IMAGETAGGOESHERE Food prices have risen drastically over the past year The cost of living crisis has caused the price of everything from energy bills to house prices to skyrocket, but its the weekly grocery shop that has been one of the things that has been affected the most. Despite a number of supermarkets slashing prices on basic items such as bread and pasta over the past few weeks, this year has seen an astronomical rise in the cost of food, as inflation has been at a record high. But just how much has the cost of basic items gone up in 2023? Let’s find out. How much have food prices increased in 2023? Consumer champion Which? has created a monthly inflation tracker, which shows that the price of many food items is rising much more sharply than the rate of inflation . The tracker looks at 20 categories of food and drink items at eight UK supermarkets and compares how much their prices have increased since the same month last year. It weights the figures based on supermarket market share and the sales volume of each product category.  The tracker found that as of April 2023, the food that had gone up the most was cheese, which has risen 25.5% since April 2022. Second on the list was milk, which has risen 22.9% since 2022. Which? also revealed that Lidl is the supermarket that has risen in price the most in the past year, up 24.9% since April 2022, while Aldi was in second place at 22.9%.
