10 British troops deployed to support Poland on Belarus border

Britain is joining forces with Poland by sending 10 U.K. troops to fortify the Belarus border as thousands of migrants attempt to cross the frontier into the EU.

The U.K. Ministry of Defence said the mission, which was agreed with the Polish government, is meant to provide “engineer support” rather than police the border. The forces, which have been on the ground since Thursday, are expected to repair or fortify fencing.

Poland has already sent thousands of soldiers, military equipment and riot police to reinforce the border with razor wire.

EU leaders have dubbed Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko’s pushing of thousands of migrants to the country’s border with Poland a “hybrid war.”

NATO has called on Belarus to stop what it terms a politically-motivated “instrumentalization of irregular migration,” adding: “These callous actions endanger the lives of vulnerable people.”
